When to virtualise — and when not to

Virtualisation is excellent for consolidating several ageing boxes, testing safely, and failing over a VM. It is a poor answer to “we have one file server and six people” if it adds licences and complexity your team will not run.

Good reasons to virtualise

• Several physical servers, low utilisation
• You need snapshots and cleaner recovery
• You are planning a private cloud / HCI step

Good reasons to wait

• One simple workload and no admin time
• The real problem is backup or power, not the hypervisor
