How to size your first proper server

The expensive mistake is not buying a slightly smaller CPU. It is buying a tower that cannot grow, has no out-of-band management, and is already out of warranty when the business depends on it.

Start from the workload

File server, Tally/ERP, a handful of VMs, or CCTV storage are different designs. We ask what runs today, how many users, and what happens if the box is down for a day.

Then size, then buy

• RAM and disk grow faster than CPU for most SMBs
• RAID is not a backup
• Warranty and next-business-day support matter in Bengaluru heat more than a brochure TFLOPS number
